Filmmaker Rono Mukherjee passed away on Wednesday (May 28), leaving the entire Mukherjee family bereaved and heartbroken. His funeral took place in the evening and it was attended by Tanishaa Mukerji, Ayan Mukerji, Ashutosh Gowariker and others.
The cause of Rono's death is yet to be revealed. The news of his demise came as a shocker as it was only a couple of months ago that his brother, actor Deb Mukherjee, breathed his last in Mumbai.
Who was Rono Mukherjee?
While Rono was not as popular as his brothers Deb Mukherjee and Joy Mukherjee, he had a few films to his credit as well, but in the capacity of a filmmaker.
He served as the director of the 1965 film, Tu Hi Meri Zindagi, starring Deb Mukherjee, Libi Rana and others. He was also credited as the music director for the film.
While Rono spent majority of his life away from the limelight, he maintained close ties with his siblings, cousins, and the next generation of kids.
Rono was the uncle of Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Ayan Mukerji and Tanishaa. He was the son of Sashadhar Mukherjee, who is considered as one of the pioneers of Indian cinema.
Mukherjee family pays their respects
"With profound sorrow and a heavy heart, we inform you that Rono Mukherjee, eldest of the Mukherjee Brothers of North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja, has departed for his heavenly abode," a statement from the family's team read.
Despite heavy rains lashing the city, several members of the Mukherjee family turned up to pay their last respects to Rono at his residence on Wednesday.
Tanishaa and Ayan were seen reaching the venue in all-white traditional outfits. Ashutosh Gowariker, who happens to be quite close to the Mukherjee family, also rushed to the crematorium with his wife.
