Actor Ishaan Khatter, who is the latest heartthrob of the nation, courtesy his web series The Royals, opened up on shooting for intimate scenes with Tabu in their 2020 show A Suitable Boy. Calling it a "seamless" process, he shared how the actress made him feel safe and comfortable, and their camaraderie reflected on screen as well.
Calling his jodi with Tabu the "perfect casting", Ishaan told Zoom, "I think a lot of it is in the writing. If you were to put Tabu and I in another story, in another piece of writing, where we overlooked the age gap or that we didn't address it, it might have looked out of place. But it was the point written into the story in that way, and the text supported what we were doing, and then we were reading into that."
Ishaan went on to say that he was not "freaked out" around Tabu, but rather felt safer and seen, and that they never had to prep or speak about it before shooting for certain intimate scenes. "She would be talking about random things, like, what do you want for lunch or something, or like, usko dekha kaise aankhe banara tha... She is very naughty, she's like a child on set," he gushed.
He further continued, "She could be making a joke, and then suddenly, she could be like this character, so like, I think it was fun, just so much fun working with her because so much of what we do is, how do you make a moment dense? How do you make it come alive? How do you communicate more without saying anything? And it just happened, like, seamlessly with Tabu, you know, it was just like a conversation with our eyes."
A Suitable Boy, which is streaming on Netflix, is based on Vikram Seth's novel of the same name. In the show, directed by Mira Nair, Ishaan was seen romancing Tabu, who is 24 years older to him. Both of them were lauded for their performance and chemistry.
