Marathi actress Jyoti Chandekar, best known for her role as Poorna Aji in Tharala Tar Mag, died on Saturday in Pune at 68, leaving the Marathi industry in shock. Reportedly, she had been undergoing treatment for the past few days and died after a prolonged illness. The news of her death was shared on the official Star Pravah social media page, which paid tribute to Jyoti Chandekar, with a caption in Marathi: "Heartfelt tribute to everyone's beloved Purna grandmother i.e. senior actress Jyoti Chandekar."
Her funeral will be held at Pune’s Vaikunth Crematorium at 11 am.
Her family is yet to share an official statement.
Jyoti Chandekar’s daughter, Tejaswini Pandit, is also a well-known actress in the Marathi industry. The duo appeared together in the award-winning film Ticha Umbartha, directed by Dipti Ghonsikar, where Jyoti played Tejaswini’s mother-in-law.
Both received high praise for their performances.
Jyoti Chandekar fell ill on the set of Tharala Tar Mag last year due to low sodium levels. She was hospitalised and had to take a break, returning to the serial after nearly two months.
Talking about the same, earlier, in an interview with The Craft, Jyoti said, "It felt like I literally came back from the brink of death. No production waits two months for a single actor. But everyone waited for me. I wasn’t working for two months, yet they managed everything so beautifully that it still felt like Poorna Aaji… Aaji is here. No one let my absence be felt.”
