Vidisha tragedy: Several families lose breadwinners

11 bodies consigned to flames as villagers mourn the dead

BHOPAL: The well tragedy of Ganj Basoda not only claimed 11 lives but also ruined many families as they lost their breadwinners. Though the state government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next kin of diseased, the victims’ families have to run the family affairs at their own. Relatives of the some bereaved families have come in support even after government’s monetary support. They assured that they will stand by the families as they have to guide the children to realise their responsibilities.

Valmiki family has lost two members—Sunil Valmiki and his son Subham Valmiki. As per the family, when people raised alarm that Sandeep Ahirwar (7) fell down, Sunil who was a sanitation worker with civic body, rushed to the spot followed by his son. Both of them jumped into well to save Sandeep. But both drowned. Everything has gone with their deaths. Valmiki family has grandfather and disabled grand mother.

Similarly, Sachin (16), who lost his father Narain Singh, said, “There are two brothers and a sister in the family. Father was main breadwinner. Government has announced to provide Rs 5 lakh aid which is big support at this juncture. It is a big relief. But now onus is on my shoulder after the death of my father in the well tragedy. We have dropped studies but now we have to do something to maintain family in dignified way in the village.”
