Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Congress corporators met the Divisional Commissioner, Sanjeev Singh, on Friday, seeking action against the civic body’s Chairman,Kishan Suryavanshi, for allegedly using unparliamentary language and showing bias during a recent council meeting.

Led by BMC’s Leader of Opposition (LoP) Shabista Zaki, the delegation submitted a written complaint, alleging that Suryavanshi insulted Emperor Ashoka by expressing objections to his name and unilaterally pushing for the renaming of Ashoka Garden without proper procedure or consent.

The controversy stems from the BMC council’s July 24 meeting, where proposals for the construction of immersion ghats, renaming Ashoka Garden, and naming a square outside a park on 80 Feet Road as Vivekananda Chowk were discussed.

Tensions flared when BJP corporator Devendra Bhargava read a proposal suggesting renaming institutions such as Hamidia Hospital and College. During the reading, the Bhopal Nawab was referred to as a ‘traitor’, a remark that Congress claimed was later repeated and endorsed by Suryavanshi himself from the chair, despite demands to expunge it. Congress leaders alleged these were communal remarks meant to provoke division.

Calling the Chairman’s actions a misuse of authority, the Congress delegation urged the Divisional Commissioner to initiate disciplinary action and uphold democratic decorum in municipal proceedings.
