Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): Two young boys, sons of police officers, drowned in the Narmada River while having morning bath on Sunday.
The incident occurred Sunday morning in Kalighat, under the Gwarighat Police Station, Jabalpur district.
The victims, 17-year-old Sumit Dubey and Bijendra Markam, were part of a group of five friends who had come to the river from Barela for a morning bath. While swimming together in the river, both were caught in the strong current and started drowning.
Despite efforts by their friends to rescue them, the current was too strong, and within moments, both were swept away. Hearing their screams, other people and priests present at the ghat tried to help, but by the time they reached, the boys had been pulled deep into the river.
Upon receiving the information, the Gwarighat police and local divers immediately launched a rescue operation. After an hour of intense search, the bodies were recovered some distance from the site.
The tragic news spread quickly, and family members and acquaintances gathered at the scene, turning the atmosphere somber. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to the Medical College Hospital.
Gwarighat TI Subhash Singh Baghel confirmed that Sumit and Bijendra had gone to bathe with three other friends, and during the bath, they entered the deeper part of the river where they were caught in the strong current.
Sumit’s father, CP Dubey, is a Head Constable at Gwarighat Police Station, while Bijendra’s father, Santosh Markam, serves as a Sub-Inspector in Panna district and has previously served at Kundam and Barela police stations.
This tragic incident has deeply saddened the local police force. The local administration and police have urged caution at places with strong currents in the Narmada River and have advised against bathing without proper safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
