Chhatarpur (Madhya Pradesh): The historic ponds of Chhatarpur like Gwalmangra Pond, and Sankat Mochan Pond are currently overwhelmed with filth and water hyacinth, sparking concern among local residents.

The unchecked pollution is not only damaging city's natural heritage but also posing serious environmental and health risks.

Gwalmangra Pond, considered a symbol of the city's cultural legacy, is now covered entirely with water hyacinth and garbage. Similar conditions persist in the Singhari River and Sankat Mochan Pond.

Locals report increasing mosquito infestations and foul odour, raising fears of disease outbreak.

BJP leader Abhishek Tamrakar stated that residents had repeatedly requested action but the administration failed to respond. He warned that if immediate steps were not taken, people might be forced to protest.

Experts and locals alike say that restoring these water bodies would not only beautify the city but also support rainwater conservation, raise groundwater levels, promote fish farming, and enhance tourism potential.

Citizens have urged administration to launch a regular pond-cleaning drive, remove water hyacinth, and implement proper waste management. The residents have appealed to authorities to prioritise the preservation of ancient water sources for city’s environmental and economic well-being.
