Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): Amid rising road accidents in the city, the Jabalpur police have intensified enforcement of traffic rules. Now, they are extending action to government offices and police personnel violating traffic safety rules.
Their main focus is on - strict helmet and seat belt compliance.
According to reports, as many as 280 people have died in road accidents in the district between January to May 2025. Also, it was discovered most of the fatalities were linked to helmet and seat belt negligence.
Recent cases, including a tragic crash in Sihora that killed three youths, were also attributed to road ‘un-safety.’
1.5k deaths in 2 years
Between 2023 and 2025, Jabalpur witnessed over 9,500 accidents, resulting in 1,414 deaths and more than 11k injuries. Police have also identified 11 accident-prone black spots and cancelled 305 licenses over four years for reckless behavior.
How to be exempted from fine?
Under SP Sampat Upadhyay and Additional SP (Traffic) Sonali Dubey, a city-wide awareness campaign is ongoing. Special drives at major junctions like Malviya and Damohnaka Chowk are targeting encroachments and violators.
In a positive move, riders who purchase helmets on the spot are exempted from fines.
Dubey observed a slight decline in accidents but a rise in deaths, mainly due to non-use of protective gear. Strict helmet mandates are now in force across all government offices and institutions.
Officials stress that road safety starts with rule-following by all, including authorities. A helmet or seat belt might seem small, but it can save a life.
