Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The growing menace of drug addiction is fuelling a disturbing spike in domestic violence cases in city with victims now extending beyond spouses to include parents and mothers.

Two separate incidents on Wednesday were reported in which elderly women were assaulted by their addicted sons.

In the first case, a woman lodged complaint stating that her son, allegedly addicted to drugs, demanded money from her and turned violent when she refused.

The 50-year old woman, a resident of Shyamala Hills, was at home when her 25-year-old son Sohel reached home high on drugs. The woman rebuked her son for his addiction to drugs. However, Sohel not only abused her but also attacked her, leaving her with minor injuries.

In the second case, another woman alleged that her son verbally abused her, insulted her in front of neighbours, and forcibly pushed her out of the house during a heated confrontation.

The 58-year-old woman, a resident of Tila Jamalpura, told police that her son Girdhar Lalwani was a drug and liquor addict.

On Tuesday night, Girdhar demanded money from his mother to buy drugs. He was infuriated when she refused. Police have registered both cases and initiated investigations.
