Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Leaky roofs, damp walls, paneless windows, hole in ceiling, slippery corridors and lack of proper drainage system, have become woes of government schools in the state capital during monsoon.

The compound of Government Naveen High School in Arif Nagar in Old City has turned into a pool of stagnant water due to no proper drainage system in place. Teachers and students have to walk through the ankle-deep pool to reach the building.

According to a school teacher, about three months back, the BMC has done some civil work to ensure drainage but as the road is on a higher elevation, water flows into the ground but gets drained away in about half-an-hour.

At Vidya Vihar Higher Secondary School in Professor Colony, a few hundred metres from Raj Bhawan, the windows in the room where Class 12 periods are held do not have panes. The result is that when it rains, water gushes into the classroom, putting a stop to teaching.

In another room where Class 9 students study, the roof leaks. ‘We have complained to the Principal ma’am. She has said something will be done,’ a student said.

The situation of Kamla Nehru Higher Secondary School - one of the oldest in the city - is located in New Market, is no better. It has been designated a CM Rise School. The roof of the room where Class 4A is held, has a visible hole, through which water flows into the classroom when it rains. Around 50 students study in the room. The room where Class 6 students study also has a leaky roof. The walls are damp and the corridors are slippery.

In Kasturba Higher Secondary School in North TT Nagar, water leaks from the roof of the toilet. The toilet door cannot be locked as it has swollen due to moisture. Class 9A has a smart (digital) board for teaching but none of the three windows in the room has panes. It has been years since the walls got a new coat of paint.

The walls are damp and plaster is peeling off them. ‘Putai nahin huyee hai isliye diwarein geeli hain,” a girl student explains. The teachers of the schools refused to comment on it. One of them said that they would need permission from the District Education Officer or the Director of Public Instruction before they can say anything.
