World Ocean Day is observed every year on June 8. The Significant day highlights the importance of oceans and to encourage collective action for their protection. In 2025, this global day holds even greater significance as concerns over climate change, pollution, and marine biodiversity loss continue to grow. The theme for this year focuses on "Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate", urging people, organisations, and governments to work together for a healthier planet.
About World Ocean Day
Oceans cover more than 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and play a crucial role in sustaining life. They regulate the climate by absorbing about 25 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions and produce over half of the world’s oxygen. From controlling weather patterns to supporting a diverse range of marine life, oceans are deeply interconnected with our everyday lives.
More than three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods. Oceans are a major source of food, energy, and transportation. Sustainable ocean use is essential for economic growth, especially for island and coastal nations. However, increasing threats such as overfishing, plastic pollution, coral bleaching, and rising sea levels are putting immense pressure on marine ecosystems.
Significance
World Ocean Day serves as a reminder of the need to protect marine ecosystems through global cooperation. Schools, communities, and governments observe the day through clean-up drives, awareness programs, and policy discussions. Individuals are also encouraged to reduce plastic use, support sustainable seafood choices, and raise awareness on ocean conservation.
History
In 2008, the United Nations officially recognised World Ocean Day, making it a global event to strengthen public engagement in ocean preservation. Today, it is not just a celebration of the ocean’s beauty and bounty but also a call to action. As we mark World Ocean Day 2025, it is vital to remember that our future is tied to the health of the oceans.
