Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has planned to create awareness about road safety among students and school drivers under the initiative of the ‘Road Safety Trek’ programme starting June 1. The programme has been designed to educate and create awareness among school students from classes 5 to 10 and drivers through engaging outdoor experiences and interactive activities.
Archana Gaikwad, Regional Transport Officer, speaking to The Free Press Journal, said, “The motive behind the programme is to spread awareness among students about traffic norms. This programme will bring students into the lap of nature at Dive Ghat, where the RTO has already planted 6,000 plants of 110 species.”
The programme is set to be conducted every Saturday, and around 600 students will participate in a single day. In Pune city, there are 7,963 schools with 1,084,459 students. These students will be called upon and Pune RTO will make them aware of the importance of traffic norms.
The programme has been designed in such a way that students will be able to learn the rules and regulations while enjoying and playing in nature.
Apart from that, school van drivers will also get knowledge of handling fire extinguishers and responding to emergency situations.
Each student will receive a Road Safety Kit including items such as a compass, stickers, greeting cards, and friendship bands embedded with key road safety messages.
Furthermore, Gaikwad added, this is a crucial stage where students learn the most and retain it for a lifetime. If they become aware of traffic rules at a young age, the chances of violating norms will be reduced, and they will also stop others from doing so.
“It is important to teach these rules properly to students; accordingly, Pune RTO has decided to launch the programme,” added Gaikwad.
