Mumbai’s Water Reserves Rise to 25% as Monsoon Showers Boost Lake Levels

Mumbai’s water supply situation has shown a positive turn, with the city’s lakes now holding 25.18 per cent of their total storage capacity, thanks to consistent monsoon showers across the region. According to the latest report released at 6:00 am on Friday, June 20, 2025, by the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department (Bhandup Complex), the collective stock across all seven major lakes now stands at 3,64,233 million litres out of the total required 14.47 lakh million litres.

This development comes as the city continues to receive steady rainfall, particularly in the lake catchment areas that play a crucial role in Mumbai’s annual water supply. Bhatsa Lake, which contributes the largest share to the city’s drinking water, recorded the most significant improvement, receiving 141 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The rainfall led to a 6.50-meter rise in the lake’s water level, pushing its usable storage to 1,48,462 million litres, the highest among all reservoirs currently.

Other key lakes such as Modak Sagar, Tansa, and Middle Vaitarna have also recorded moderate gains due to consistent rainfall, improving the overall outlook for the city’s water availability. However, reservoirs like Tulsi and Vihar are still at relatively lower levels, and officials say it will take several more days of strong rainfall to reach comfortable stock levels.
