Navi Mumbai: A motorcyclist lost his life while his friend sustained serious injuries in a tragic accident that occurred in the early hours of Monday near Karanjade, along the JNPT Highway. The mishap took place when the duo’s motorcycle rammed into a road divider amid heavy rains. Following an initial probe, Panvel City Police have registered a case of negligence against the deceased rider.
The deceased has been identified as Rishikesh Manoj Gawde (30), and the injured pillion rider as Alpesh Ramchandra Kolhkar (27) — both residents of Karanjade.

According to police sources, Kolhkar had gone to Gawde’s residence for dinner on Sunday night. The two spent time chatting late into the night and decided to go for a motorcycle ride around 2 AM. After reaching Palaspe, they were returning to Karanjade when it began raining heavily.
Near the Marathon building on the JNPT Highway, Rishikesh reportedly failed to spot a turn towards Karanjade due to poor visibility in the downpour. As a result, the speeding motorcycle crashed into the road divider, leaving both riders severely injured.

Police personnel rushed to the spot and immediately shifted the victims to MGM Hospital in Kamothe. However, doctors declared Gawde dead on arrival, while Kolhkar continues to receive treatment for his injuries.
"The accident occurred due to Gawde’s rash and negligent driving under unsafe weather conditions. Based on this, we have registered a case against him and initiated further proceedings," a police officer said.
