While Mehta is the director of Indian Express Commercial Pvt Ltd, a media firm, the next-door flat belongs to a doctor who had gone to Vasai at the time of the incident. The owner of the second-floor residence has been in the United States for the past two months. Mehta said that when he and his wife returned from Pune, they saw that their flat as well as that of the doctor had been broken open. Moments later, they heard a noise and saw a man escaping from the doctor's house.
