Mumbai: In a significant cybercrime breakthrough, the Dahisar police have arrested a man from Yeshwanthpur in Karnataka for allegedly creating numerous fake social media accounts using the identities of women on Wednesday. The arrest followed a complaint filed by a student, who reported that a fake Instagram account had been created using her name and photo. The account was used to send obscene and abusive messages to others, causing distress.
Acting on the FIR, Mumbai Police launched an immediate investigation. Cyber crime cell officers traced the digital trail to Karnataka, after which a police team was dispatched to Yeshwanthpur. The suspect was arrested and brought back to Mumbai for further questioning.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered shocking details about the extent of the accused's online activities. Police found that the individual had created around 100 fake email accounts and 11 fake Instagram profiles, all impersonating different women. Moreover, over 13,500 images of women were recovered from his devices.
The Mumbai Police shared information about the arrest on their official X (formerly Twitter) account and posted a cyber awareness video to alert citizens about the threat of digital impersonation and online harassment. They also urged the public to report any suspicious online behaviour promptly.
