Son Of Sardaar 2 gave Kubbra Sait something she had never been part of before — the front seat at her first big movie trailer launch. In SOS 2, she plays Mehwish, a wild, fun, free-spirited and unapologetic character. Over a phone call with The Free Press Journal, she spoke about her character, experiences filming abroad, being in a relationship, friendship with Mukul Dev, and more. Excerpts:

Q. You wore mismatched earrings to the SOS 2 trailer launch?

A. Yes! My character is like that, she does these crazy things — one of them being her mismatched earrings. And I guess they just became like a real fun process to be a part of, because every time we had a costume change for her, we would spend like 20 minutes deciding: how about a lock with a lemon? Or a cherry? Or a strawberry! Crazy, fun stuff.

Q. How was the experience working with the cast?

A. It was a beautiful and wholesome experience. I was away from home but had my own people. We were shooting for 45 days in Scotland. We used to just go out, watch plays together, find different cuisines to eat. We would be working for over 12 hours, but still had the energy to go out and explore. The weather was great for most parts of it — it seemed like the Scottish weather could change anytime. People used to cook on set. In fact, when we came back to Bombay, I made biryani. People would make food from their home and bring it to the sets, and we would eat together, cracking jokes all the time. It was just so nice because we just got the opportunity to actually get to know each other, which we rarely do. I met Sanjay Mishra — such an accomplished actor. He’s so brilliant. I met Sharat Saxena incidentally — I had worked with him 12 years ago. Mukul Dev too — obviously, it’s a very sad thing that Mukul passed away. But Mukul and I had known each other before I moved to Mumbai to become an actor. Such great moments. We all looked out for each other, and it would be so cold, we would just give each other warm hugs — it was more accessible than a blanket.

Q. How did you know Mukul Dev, from before coming to Bollywood you said?

A. Yes, I was working in Dubai as an emcee at an award function, and someone introduced me to Mukul and asked me to show him around, as he doesn’t go out often. So I was just driving him around everywhere. We went shopping for his daughter. At that time, I had no idea that I was going to be moving to Mumbai in the next few years.

Q. What are your thoughts about marriage and the whole marriage scene right now?

A. You know, after a very long time, I’m happy to say that, you know, I’ve finally found meaning in relationships. I think the first relationship I had to crack was the one with myself. How am I willing to show up unapologetically for me? Who am I when I’m the happiest, and who am I when I’m not feeling so good and I’m sad about something? We are all going through these myriad emotions. So understanding myself became my first relationship with myself, and that has undoubtedly opened up relationships with other people. But I am very happy to say that, you know, for me, being in a long relationship — a healthy one — has only just happened. And I’m growing in it. I’m happy to see where it goes.
