Morena (Madhya Pradesh): The festival of Raksha Bandhan fills markets with the sweet smell of deserts and sugar treats, undoubtedly! There is, however, something more in the market... adulterated mawa, synthetic milk and other artificial ingridients used in making of these sweets!

A large network of fake mawa (khoya) makers has become active again, in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind and Morena districts. Beware, before you buy sweets as this adulterated mawa can have severe impact on health of your loved ones.

According to information, the Chambal region, once known for dacoits, is now in the news for fake mawa.

Over 400 illegal units in Bhind and Morena are making fake mawa daily. Surprisingly, Bhind – which is not known for high milk production, is the biggest supplier.

The fake mawa is not just limited to Gwalior. It is being sent in large amounts to Bhopal, Rewa, Satna, Jabalpur, and other major cities. Many people who eat sweets made from this fake mawa fall sick, often without realizing the cause.

The network of adulterators is so strong that it is even faster than the food safety department's informers. The fake mawa is sent during the night through buses and trains, making it hard to catch.

How fake mawa is made?

First, fat is removed from real mawa.

Then cheap palm oil or low-quality oil is mixed.

To increase weight, starch and synthetic materials are added.

Health risks of fake mawa

Food poisoning

Stomach pain and loose motions

Liver and kidney damage

More harmful for children and the elderly

Hot water + iodine test: If the mawa turns blue, it has starch.

Rub on palm: Real mawa gives ghee; bad smell means fake.

Smell it: Real mawa smells like milk.

Stickiness: If it sticks in the mouth, it may be fake.

In water: Real mawa dissolves, fake one breaks.

Roll into a ball: If it breaks easily, it’s likely fake.

Dr. Sachin Srivastava, Food Safety Officer, said that a special drive has been started before the festival. Mobile labs are collecting samples from markets. Strict watch is being kept on items coming from Bhind and Morena.

Even though the High Court has ordered strict action and roadblocks, the on-ground action is still weak in many places.
