The driver of a double-decker bus that crashed into a bridge in Greater Manchester, causing the roof of the bus to be ripped apart, has been arrested.
At least 15 people suffered injuries in the collision, with two sustaining serious injuries and one in critical condition.
The incident reportedly occurred on Barton Lane in the Salford area at around 3pm on Monday, 21 July.
According to reports, the driver of the bus involved in the accident has been arrested for reckless driving that caused injuries to passengers.
The driver was later released on bail while investigations continue.
Police reported that the bus had deviated from its designated route. According to Greater Manchester Police, the driver ignored multiple height restriction warnings, including barrier chains and warning signs, before striking a low railway bridge.
The collision left three individuals with severe injuries—a 19-year-old woman and two men—who are currently hospitalised in stable condition. An additional 17 passengers sustained minor injuries that were not life-threatening or permanently disabling and received treatment at the crash site.
Authorities are seeking witnesses to the incident and requesting anyone with relevant video footage from dashcams, mobile devices, or security cameras to come forward. Vernon Everitt, Greater Manchester's Transport Commissioner, announced yesterday that an "immediate and comprehensive investigation" has begun. Everitt expressed sympathy for all passengers involved and praised the quick response of emergency services. He confirmed that authorities are collaborating closely with Greater Manchester Police investigators and Stagecoach, the bus company.
This marks the second such incident at the Barton Lane bridge—in April 2023, another bus collided with the same structure, resulting in significant damage to the vehicle's roof.
