Islamabad: Former jailed Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday hit out at Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir for his promotion to the rank of Field Marshal. Khan in an X post said that General Munir should have given himself the title of "king" as the country is ruled by the law of the jungle.
"MashaAllah, General Asim Munir has been made Field Marshal. Though frankly, it might have been more fitting to give him the title of 'King' instead — because right now, the country is ruled by the law of the jungle. And in the jungle, there is only one king," Khan posted on X.
On Tuesday, General Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, days after India destroyed 11 air bases of Pakistan in the recent military conflict after Operation Sindoor, which was launched to target terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Notably, Khan has been in jail since August 2023 in multiple cases. He also called rumours of any deal being made with the Pakistan army as "baseless".
"No deal has taken place, nor is any dialogue underway. These are baseless lies," Khan said in the X post. However, he called upon the military establishment to have talks with him for the interests and future of Pakistan.
"The country is facing external threats, a surge in terrorism, and an economic crisis. We must unite. I have never asked for anything for myself before, nor will I now," he said.
Khan also cautioned Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif about India's attack and said that Pakistan should be prepared.
Khan also took a dig at Sharif. He said that Sharif became PM even after having cases of corruption against him.
"The ongoing situation reflects that the very spirit of democracy is being crushed. When you send the message that the bigger the thief, the higher the office they’ll hold — you bury justice. The NAB still holds a case against (President) Asif Zardari’s sister involving five apartments registered under employees’ names. She is abroad, and no one dares question her. Shahbaz Sharif was accused in PKR 22-billion money laundering case, yet he was made Prime Minister," he said.
He accused that constitutional framework has been destroyed in Pakistan over the past three years.
In January this year, Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were convicted in a corruption case. Khan was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust land corruption case. Meanwhile, the court awarded Bushra Bibi a seven-year jail term.
The former Pakistan PM has been imprisoned since August 2023 in connection with various legal cases, which he maintains are politically motivated. Last year, he was acquitted in the cipher and Iddat cases but faces new charges in the Toshakhana 2 case.
