Islamabad: Pakistan is on the edge amid growing speculation of an impending coup that could lead to the removal of President Asif Ali Zardari. The timing has not gone unnoticed as July 5 marks the 47th anniversary of General Zia-ul-Haq’s infamous 1977 military coup, which further adds a symbolic weight to current developments that are fuelling public unease.
According to local media reports, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir may be positioning himself to replace Zardari. However, it remain uncertain whether the transition would be voluntary or forced.

Tensions escalated after Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in an international media interview, openly criticised General Munir. He went a step further by suggesting there should be no objection to handing over Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar to India, an unprecedented statement that quickly triggered backlash.
