Elon Musk has confirmed that Grok 5, xAI's next-generation AI model, is expected to launch before the end of this year, describing it as 'crushingly good.' This comes on the heels of the ChatGPT-5 release that brings better multimodal understanding and improved integration of Gmail and other services.
Musk, in a post on X, confirmed that Grok 5 will be released by the end of this year. This announcement follows the recent debut of Grok 4 just last month, suggesting xAI is now pursuing roughly semiannual updates to its Grok series.
Furthermore, Musk also said in another post, "Grok 4 Heavy was smarter two weeks ago than ChatGPT-5 is now and Grok 4 Heavy is already a lot better."
Grok 4 brought notable improvements over its predecessor, offering enhanced reasoning, multimodal understanding, and a 256,000‑token context window. Its 'Heavy' variant employs a multi‑agent design for complex, collaborative problem-solving. It also features 'Eve,' a British-accented AI voice capable of emotional speech and singing
Shortly beforethe ChatGPT‑5 launch, Musk also made Grok Imagine, xAI’s AI-powered video-generation feature, free for all US users, giving broad access to this creative tool via iOS and Android apps.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT‑5 debuted across OpenAI’s platforms, including integration with Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot. It delivers major enhancements in complex reasoning, coding, writing, and health-related responses; supports a vastly expanded context window; reduces hallucinations; and introduces smarter routing, tool use, and safety mechanisms.
