A resilient Catholic Gymkhana got the better of Anushakti Nagar FC, winning by a solitary goal in the MFA First Division football league at the Neville D’Souza ground, Bandra.
Striker Reuben Fernandes notched the winner in the 68th minute in a match where the Gymkhana lads called the shots for the major part of the match.
Catholic Gymkhana dominated from the outset, but the strikers were found wanting. Fernandes, Mohit Chandiramani, and Chirag Tandel wasted a couple of goal-scoring opportunities each in the first 40 minutes of the opening session.
On resumption, Catholic Gymkhana continued in the same fashion, but were unable to beat Gurukaran Singh under the Anushakti bar.
Nippy striker Reuben atoned for his first half blunders as he charged in to meet wing back Vandan Meher's low cross and deftly flicked the ball past a helpless Gurukaran to the far corner to secure a decisive match-winning goal for Catholic Gymkhana and much to joy of his teammates.
Catholic Gymkhana finished in the top position with a tally of 19 points from six wins, one draw and a loss in the last match. They have qualified for the play-offs.
