Manchester United is implementing significant cost-cutting measures, including job cuts and the closure of the staff canteen at Old Trafford, in an effort to stabilize finances after five consecutive years of losses. The club has decided to replace free staff lunches with fruit, while at the Carrington training ground, only players will continue receiving complimentary meals staff members will be limited to soup and bread.

According to report by The Sun, these changes are expected to save the club around £1 million (₹10.5 crore). The Old Trafford canteen will shut down by the end of the week, marking another step in the club’s broader financial restructuring. Additionally, Manchester United is considering making up to 200 job cuts, following a previous wave of 250 redundancies last year after British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake in the club for $1.3 billion.

The transformation plan aims to return the club to profitability after five consecutive years of losses since 2019. As part of these measures, the club anticipates that approximately 150-200 jobs may be made redundant, subject to a consultation process with employees. These would be in addition to the 250 roles removed last year.

CEO Omar Berrada emphasized that these tough decisions are part of a broader “transformation plan” aimed at securing the club’s long-term stability. “Our priority is achieving success on the pitch and improving facilities, but we cannot invest in these areas while continuously losing money,” Berrada stated. “By the end of this process, we aim to create a leaner, more financially sustainable football club that can still deliver top-tier services to fans and commercial partners.”

Amid finanacial turmoil, Manchester United is currently struggling in 15th place in the Premier League, having lost 12 of its 26 games so far.
