The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the prize money for the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy. With eight teams in Australia, England, Afghanistan, South Africa, Pakistan, India, New Zealand and Bangladesh competing for the coveted trophy, the winner will will also take home a prize money of $2.24 million (₹19.44 crore).
The runners-up will get $1.12 million (₹9.72 crore), while the losing semi-finalists will receive $560,000. With the total prize money rising to $6.9 million this year, it has seen a surge of 53 percent from the 2017 edition. A group stage win for any team has been announced worth $34,000, while the sides finishing fifth or sixth will get $350,000 each. Meanwhile, the seventh or eighth position teams will take home $140,000.
Additionally, $125,000 each has been announced for every participant. The tournament is a historic one, given it returns for the first time since 2017 and an ICC event is being hosted by Pakistan for the first time since the 1996 World Cup.
Pakistan beat India to clinch the 2017 Champions Trophy title
Pakistan, meanwhile, will start as the defending champions ahead of the 2025 edition, having sealed their first title in 2017 by defeating arch-rivals in the final in London. The Men in Green, captained by Sarfaraz Ahmed, amassed 338 in the final, spearheaded by Fakhar Zaman's hundred. Later, fiery spells from Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali ensured that India got nowhere close to the target.
Pakistan will start the tournament against New Zealand on February 19 in Karachi. However, the hosts will square off against New Zealand in the tri-series final on Friday the same venue.
