Cristiano Ronaldo's absence from Al Nassr's squad for their AFC Champions League Round of 16 first-leg match against Esteghlal FC on March 3 raised questions regarding the reasons behind his omission. While some speculated that it could be linked to legal issues in Iran, particularly surrounding the possibility of facing punishment for adultery but the truth remains unclear.

The controversy dates back to an incident during Ronaldo’s previous trip to Iran in September 2023, when Al Nassr played Persepolis. During the visit, Ronaldo met Fatemeh Hammami Nasrabadi, a disabled Iranian artist who paints with her feet. The two shared an emotional moment, with Ronaldo kissing her forehead, a gesture that went viral on social media.

According to Goal.com report in 2023, Hammamiwas was asked if Ronaldo was aware that he was committing a crime by embracing her, She said: "No one told him anything about the laws of Iran and he didn't know it either, but Ronaldo's hug was for his love and brotherhood, and he had no bad intentions. My family and I have no complaints about this issue, we just want to deny these accusations against Cristiano."

Iran embassy clear air on Ronaldo receiving 99 lashes rumours

Iranian law prohibits physical contact between unmarried men and women, with potential penalties, including up to 99 lashes, for actions considered "adultery." While no legal action was taken at the time, rumors spread that Ronaldo could face punishment if he returned to Iran.

In response to these claims, the Iranian Embassy issued a statement strongly denying the rumours. A spokesperson while speaking to Talk Sports said, “We strongly deny the issuance of any court ruling against any international athlete in Iran,”. His sincere and humane meeting with Fatemeh Hamami was also praised and admired by both the people and the country’s sports authorities.”
