The Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) Pune has released organ donation and transplantation statistics for the past few years, highlighting both achievements and challenges in the city’s life-saving transplant efforts.

According to the data, the year 2024 was a strong year for organ donation. The same year, Pune registered 70 brain stem death (BSD) donors from January 1 to December 31, 2024, leading to 181 organs transplanted in the zone. This included 93 kidneys, 58 livers, six hearts, four kidney-pancreas combinations, 14 lungs and one heart-lung transplant.

In the year 2025 (January 1- August 12), Pune witnessed a slight dip in the donations. In the first seven and a half months of 2025, 49 BSD donors were converted into retrievals, resulting in 131 transplanted organs. The breakdown includes 71 kidneys, 41 livers, four hearts, one kidney-pancreas, one heart-lung, nine lungs and one kidney-heart transplant. This figure is slightly lower than the same period in 2024, raising concerns about the need to intensify awareness and donor registration drives.

ZTCC’s data reveals steady improvement over the years. In the year 2023, around 58 donors provided 158 transplanted organs, of which 74 were kidneys, 43 livers, nine hearts, 10 lungs, eight kidney-pancreas, two kidney-liver and one heart-lung.

In 2022, Pune recorded 46 donors who together provided 118 transplanted organs, including 66 kidneys, 44 livers, two hearts, one kidney–pancreas combination and 2 heart–lung transplants. The year before, in 2021, there were 44 donors resulting in 97 transplanted organs, comprising 49 kidneys, 41 livers, two hearts, two kidney–pancreas combinations, one kidney–liver transplant and two small bowel transplants.

“Every donor gives multiple patients a new lease of life. Our goal is to ensure no organ goes unused,” said Aarti Gokhale, ZTCC Pune Coordinator.
