In the 25th organ donation facilitated by the Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) this year, a 33-year-old auto-rickshaw driver from Dharashiv was declared brain-dead due to intracranial bleeding. He had been admitted to Chandan Neuroscience Hospital in Solapur. Following counselling on March 31, his wife and mother courageously consented to donate his organs.
As a result, his two kidneys, liver and lungs were successfully retrieved and allocated as per ZTCC Pune’s guidelines. All organs were utilised, giving new life to critically ill patients. His liver was transplanted to a 21-year-old woman at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune; one kidney was given to a 22-year-old male, also at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital; the second kidney was transplanted into a 43-year-old man at Ashwini Rural Medical College, Solapur; and his lungs were allocated to a 66-year-old man at Dr DY Patil Medical College, Pimpri.

All organs were transported to Pune on April 3 via a green corridor, enabling timely transplants. According to hospital authorities, all recipients are currently in stable condition following surgery.
So far in 2025, ZTCC Pune has facilitated 25 deceased organ donations, benefiting 72 patients.
ZTCC Coordinator Aarti Gokhale said, “Since its inception in 2004, ZTCC has enabled 582 organ donations, saving over 1,426 lives. In 2025 alone, we've coordinated 25 donations, leading to 72 successful transplants — including 39 kidneys, 24 livers, six lungs, one heart, and one pancreas. We are optimistic about these numbers growing with increasing awareness and family counselling.”

ZTCC Chairman Dr AG Huprikar lauded the efforts of coordinators and healthcare professionals involved. “Their compassionate approach helps grieving families find purpose in their loss. This year alone, 72 lives have been saved thanks to their dedication. We extend our deepest gratitude to every family and professional who was part of this life-saving journey,” he said.
