Amid rising concerns over water scarcity and increasing leakage rates, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a public appeal asking residents to support the city’s water meter installation initiative. The civic body aims to complete the installation of 100% Advanced Meter Reading (AMR) water meters across Pune within the next month.
Officials say that a significant gap remains between the water drawn from the city’s dams and the actual requirement of Pune’s growing population. Adding to the challenge is the high rate of leakage in the city’s water distribution system, which authorities believe can only be effectively tackled through a comprehensive water audit — a process that requires accurate metering at every pipeline connection.
“The only way to identify leaks and curb unnecessary water usage is by measuring water flow precisely. Installing meters in all homes and establishments is a key part of this process,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner M.J. Pradeep Chandran. “This is not just an administrative step; it’s essential for ensuring equitable water distribution and preventing future shortages," added Pradeep.
However, PMC has observed resistance in some localities toward the meter installation drive. Officials warn that such non-cooperation may force the corporation to impose water cuts citywide. In extreme cases, legal action may also be taken under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duty.

Residents are urged to extend full cooperation
“We are committed to avoiding any harsh steps, but people need to understand that this is a collective responsibility,” said a senior civic officer. “The success of the uniform water supply plan hinges on public support.”
Residents are urged to extend full cooperation to field staff and contractors working on the project. The PMC clarified that this effort is not a revenue-generating exercise, but a long-term measure to improve efficiency and accountability in water supply.
“We appeal to Punekars: help us help you. Only together can we ensure that every drop counts,” the civic body added.
For further information or to report issues during meter installation, citizens can contact their local ward office or visit the PMC’s official website.
