A 45-year-old man in Pune created a fake profile on a matrimonial website, connected with a divorced woman and duped her of Rs 10 lakh after marrying her. Regarding this matter, a case has been registered at the Kothrud Police Station. The accused has been identified as Sachin Jagtap (45), officials said on Wednesday.
According to the police, a 44-year-old woman has registered a police complaint against Jagtap, a resident of Ravet. The complainant, a woman residing in Kothrud, was previously divorced. She met Jagtap on a matrimonial website in November 2023.
After that, the accused gained her trust and succeeded in convincing her to marry him. They later married in front of a friend in January 2024. However, the woman continued to live at her mother's house.
Meanwhile, the accused claimed that his resort was under construction at Shrivardhan in Konkan and that he was facing financial problems. Gaining the victim's trust, the accused took her credit card and spent a whopping Rs 10.10 lakh. Later, he stopped receiving phone calls from the woman.
Assistant Police Inspector Prema Patil, speaking to The Free Press Journal, said, "The accused had created a fake profile as an entrepreneur on a matrimonial website. Following the conversation with the woman, he married her with the sole intention of duping her. The victim was not aware of his family members, as he had told her that they would not accept their marriage."
"The accused did not live with her, always citing business tours as the reason. He only contacted the victim whenever he needed money. The victim also took a loan to help him. The matter is under investigation. A case has been registered under Sections 318 (4) and 316 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyana Sanhita (BNS)," she added.
