Pune Railway Station is undergoing a major security upgrade with the installation of 160 modern CCTV cameras, equipped with face recognition technology and panic buttons at the platforms.

Speaking exclusively to The Free Press Journal, Pune Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rajesh Kumar Verma confirmed, “The existing 60 old CCTV cameras have been removed. We are now installing 160 advanced cameras across the station premises, including platforms and key entry-exit points.” So far, 60 cameras have already been set up, and the remaining are expected to be fully operational by August 31.

What makes this surveillance system unique is the addition of panic buttons that will be placed on the platforms. In case of any emergency or suspicious activity, passengers can press these buttons. Once triggered, the nearest CCTV camera will instantly focus in the direction of the incident, allowing control room staff to monitor the situation in real time and respond swiftly.

“This is part of our broader initiative to enhance technical surveillance and ensure safer travel for passengers,” Verma added.

The upgraded system is expected to deter crime, provide faster emergency response and assist in post-incident investigations through facial recognition capabilities.
