The Beed district, known as the sugarcane cutter labourers' district for its large population of sugarcane-cutting labourers, every year migrates to cut cane all over Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka. It has revealed a distressing picture of women's health and exploitation. Every year, around 1.75 lakh workers migrate from Beed for sugarcane harvesting, including 78,000 women.

Additionally, 1,523 women were found to be pregnant while working in sugarcane fields, highlighting the dire economic conditions that force them to work despite the risks.

Sugarcane-cutting labourers leave during the Diwali season and return by March/April after working for nearly six months in Maharashtra and other states. As part of a government initiative, health checkups are conducted before departure and upon return. The latest health report has revealed a disturbing prevalence of health issues among women workers, prompting a state-level meeting recently.

Key Findings from the Health Report:

477 Women (Aged 30–35) Among 843 Hysterectomy Cases: These women reported symptoms such as excessive menstrual bleeding, infections, and abdominal pain. Many underwent private surgeries, allegedly with consent from government doctors.

The health department claims 279 surgeries were done privately with approval from government doctors.

In all, 1,523 women were pregnant while working in the sugarcane fields. These women, registered on the Maternal and Child Welfare Portal, were compelled to carry a sickle in hand for survival while carrying a child in the womb.

Widespread Anaemia Among Women Labourers: The report found 3,415 women suffering from anaemia, primarily due to iron, B12, and folic acid deficiencies, along with conditions like thalassemia, heavy menstruation, and blood loss from surgeries.

District-Level Support and Interventions:

Health screening conducted for 46,231 women prior to sugarcane migration.

Health cards distributed to all women workers.

Women Health Action Groups are active in 1,132 villages to monitor and support migrant women workers.

Dr. Sachin Shekde, Maternal and Child Welfare Officer, Beed, said that the health department has confirmed that 843 women underwent hysterectomies and 1,523 were pregnant while working. These figures have been recorded during routine health screenings before and after sugarcane harvesting.
