Mumbai: The Maharashtra Federation of Senior Citizens (FESCOM), Mumbai Regional Division, marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with a special awareness program on Saturday, June 21, aimed at educating senior citizens on legal rights and protections against abuse.

Held at the Shramik Senior Citizens Association, Delisle Road, Lower Parel, the program featured legal expert and FESCOM advisor Advocate Pramod Dhokle as the keynote speaker.

Dhokle, who is also associated with the Legal and Service Centre at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, delivered an informative and engaging address on the various forms of elder abuse—ranging from physical and mental to financial and sexual—and offered practical advice on how seniors can protect themselves legally.

Highlighting the lack of social awareness on the issue, Dhokle stressed that many cases go unreported due to fear, stigma, and societal indifference. He called on senior citizens to remain vigilant and well-informed, and emphasized the importance of community organizations in creating awareness and offering support.

“Even when seniors try to lodge complaints, they are often told it is a 'family matter,' which leads to neglect by both society and the police. This must change,” Dhokle said, urging better understanding and use of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

He also addressed common legal issues like disputes over property, the importance of legal wills, and how to safeguard one's interests through gift deeds and proper documentation.

The program began with an introduction and welcome by FESCOM Secretary Mukund Fadtere, while FESCOM Mumbai Regional President Suresh Pote offered floral greetings to dignitaries and highlighted the need for such awareness campaigns. “June 15 is observed globally as Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and this event is a step toward bringing the issue into public focus,” Pote said.

Senior police officer Arvind Chandanshive from N.M. Joshi Marg Police Station also attended the event and reassured the elderly that the police department is committed to their safety and well-being.

The session drew large participation from senior men and women, who actively engaged in a question-and-answer segment. Dhokle responded to concerns ranging from legal rights to handling family disputes, offering actionable solutions.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by FESCOM executive member Dilip Gadekar. Other notable attendees included Swati Phadke, Lata Powar, and FESCOM representatives.

The program served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address elder abuse and promote a culture of dignity, safety, and respect for senior citizens.
