'What New Kind Of Journalism Has Emerged?': Raj Thackeray Slams Media For 'Misreporting' Over Possibility Of Sena UBT-MNS Alliance

The issue stems from an informal conversation Thackeray had with journalists during a two-day MNS office-bearers’ camp held at Igatpuri on July 14 and 15. According to him, the discussion was casual and not meant for publication. When asked about the party’s victory rally on July 5, Thackeray clarified that it was not political but a celebration of the Marathi people’s victory.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray publicly criticised media houses for allegedly distorting his words and publishing misleading news. In a strongly worded post on X, Thackeray expressed disappointment over what he called a growing trend of irresponsible journalism.

Thackeray's Informal Chat Over July 5 Victory Rally

The issue stems from an informal conversation Thackeray had with journalists during a two-day MNS office-bearers’ camp held at Igatpuri on July 14 and 15. According to him, the discussion was casual and not meant for publication. When asked about the party’s victory rally on July 5, Thackeray clarified that it was not political but a celebration of the Marathi people’s victory. On being asked about political alliances, he replied rhetorically, “Should I discuss alliance matters with you now?”

Despite the informal nature of the conversation, Thackeray said that several English and Marathi newspapers misquoted him, suggesting that the MNS would decide on alliances after assessing the situation ahead of the municipal elections. He accused these outlets of attributing statements to him that he never made.

“What new kind of journalism has emerged?” Thackeray questioned in his post, condemning the blurring of lines between verified reporting and social media-style gossip. He expressed concern that informal interactions were being manipulated to create sensational headlines, and pointed out that even reputed publications like the Times of India published unverified information.

Thackeray warned that such practices could erode public trust in journalism. “Do we have to keep talking just because you need daily news or someone else wants to plant news? And if nothing is found, you fabricate it?” he wrote.

Thackeray's Association With Journalism

He also stressed that his experience with journalism is deep-rooted, having been associated with the field since 1984 as a cartoonist with publications like Marmik, Lokprabha, Loksatta and Saamna. Coming from a family where periodicals were a part of everyday life, he claimed to have a thorough understanding of ethical journalism.

'Will Hold Press Conference To Make Any Political Statement,' Says Raj Thackeray

Acknowledging that many sincere journalists still exist, Thackeray urged media professionals to exercise discretion and integrity. Concluding his post, he stated, “If I wish to make any political statement, I will hold an official press conference.”
