Thane: After some part of a dilapidated ground four-storey building collapsed in Wagle estate of Thane on Monday morning, the Thane Municipal Corporation authorities temporarily vacated residents of six adjoining buildings and shifted them to a nearby school as a precautionary measure.

According to the Regional disaster management cell of Thane, on Friday at 5:20 am some parts of the first floor fell down in the Shiv Bhavan building. The ground plus four-storey building is a 30-year-old structure near Shivaji Nagar, D'souza wadi, Wagle Estate, Thane. "The building was declared dangerous last year and needed repair work. So last year itself we vacated all the residents from the building and shifted them to rental flats as a precautionary measure. The residents were asked to carry out the repair work. But they didn't carry out any repair work in the past year resulting in the part falling down. As the building was vacated last year, no one was present during the incident," said Ashok Burpulle, deputy municipal commissioner, encroachment, TMC.

However, the fire brigade, regional disaster management cell and officials from the encroachment department reached the spot and started inspecting the area. "We found the Shiv Bhavan building was in the middle, with five to six buildings adjoining it. If it collapses or falls down it will also damage the adjoining buildings which are hardly a few meters away. So as a safety measure, we vacated the residents of six buildings. We have started the demolition work of the dangerous building," added Burpulle. He also added that the residents of all the six buildings were temporarily shifted to Ambika school, Shivaji Nagar, Wagle Estate, Thane west.

The authorities vacated 6 ground plus four-storey buildings with 174 flats and more than 500 residents. The six-building are the Ashtmi Niwas building with 64 flats, Pandurang Sadan building with 24 flats, Shri Ram Niwas building with 18 flats, Shree Ganesh Niwas building with 21 flats, Pende Durga Niwas building with 29 flats and Ram Niwas building with 18 flats. All the buildings were vacated by the concerned assistant municipal commissioner of the ward.
