Panvel: In a major push to tackle the growing problem of traffic congestion, the Panvel Municipal Corporation has announced the construction of two multi-storey parking complexes. "The ambitious project aims to provide a long-term solution to parking shortages in the busy commercial areas of the city" said an official.

The lack of adequate parking facilities was observed to be causing severe traffic jams, especially in key areas. To address this, the civic body has taken up the construction of two high-rise parking complexes on a total area of 23,737 square meters.

The facilities is informed to be built near Aadya Krantiveer Vasudev Balwant Phadke Auditorium and beside Ward Office D.

The project is designed to be multi-functional and is expected to be completed within two years. The architectural consultancy firm Designo Architects and Planners has been appointed to oversee the project.

"The 10-storey complex will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 70.85 crore and will include basement parking for 207 two-wheelers and 29 four-wheelers, 30 commercial shops across the ground and first floors, five floors of car parking accommodating 140 vehicles, additional car parking on the seventh floor, and a conference hall and multipurpose hall on the upper floors with seating capacities of 282 and 500 respectively," informed an official.

The 12-storey facility will feature parking for 263 two-wheelers in two basement levels, 115 commercial shops on the lower floors, office space, and ten floors of parking for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. A large open terrace will top off the structure.

Together, the two buildings is estimated to cost around Rs121 crore and will offer parking for 510 two-wheelers and 345 four-wheelers. The complexes will also include electric vehicle charging stations and washing facilities. Parking slots will be reserved for commercial unit owners within the buildings, while nearby residents will have the option to rent parking spaces on a monthly or annual basis.

In addition to solving the parking crunch, the project is also expected to boost municipal revenue through commercial rentals and event bookings at the multi-purpose halls. With 145 shops, 8 office spaces, and large meeting halls, the complexes are being seen as a step toward financial and infrastructural strengthening of the city.

The proposal received financial and administrative clearance during the general body meeting held on July 9.
