Panvel: The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the distribution of revised property tax bills for the financial year 2025–26, consolidating previous dues and applicable penalties as the two month window provided by the supreme court has come to an end.
The SC on April 29 had directed appellants of a civil appeal made against the tax being levied by PMC to pay all outstanding property taxes from the year 2021–22 within two months.
SC Interim Relief Voided for Non-Compliance
According to PMC, several members of the appellant group did not comply with the Court’s order and failed to pay the dues within the stipulated period. As a result, the relief initially granted to them now stands null and void.
"Based on legal consultation with senior legal experts, it is being informed that the interim relief was limited only to the appellants and not applicable to all taxpayers," said the official.
Appellants Risk Paying Dues from 2016 If Appeal Fails
The court had further clarified that if the appeals were ultimately unsuccessful, the appellants would be liable to pay dues from 2016 onwards with interest. "Failure to comply within the given time frame would lead to automatic cancellation of any relief granted under the interim order," said an official.
Late Payments Will Incur Monthly Penalties
Late payments are stated to attract monthly penalties as per Rule 49 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act. PMC has now restructured and reissued the property tax bills for 2025–26. It has also issued a consolidated demand note including previous dues, penalties, and current dues.
Relief Retained for Timely Payers Only
However, members of the appellant group who did make payments within the two-month window are still eligible for relief under the Court’s interim order.
