Navi Mumbai: In a focused effort to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced a mobile cancer screening initiative that will run from May 21 to May 24. The campaign will deploy a government-provided cancer screening van across the city to conduct on-site tests for oral, breast, and cervical cancers.

As part of the ongoing National NCD Screening Programme, NMMC has been regularly screening men and women above the age of 30 at its municipal hospitals and urban primary health centers.

"These checks include tests for high blood pressure, diabetes, oral cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. The data is registered on a national health portal, and suspected cancer patients are referred to Nerul’s Public Hospital for further diagnosis," said a medical officer from NMMC.

On May 21, the van will be stationed at General Hospital in Sector 3, Airoli. The initiative will be led by Dr. Sachin Chitnis. Residents from Digha, Ilthanpada, Chinchpada, Katkaripada, Airoli, and Rabada will be referred for screening.

On May 22, the van will operate at NMMC School in Shramik Nagar under the supervision of Dr. Vandana Narayani. Citizens from Pawne, NOCIL Naka, Ghansoli, Ghansoli 4, Koparkhairane (Sectors 14 and 16), and Mahape are advised to attend.

On May 23, the screening will take place at the Urban Health Centre Ground in Juhugaon, overseen by Dr. Vidya Verma. Residents from Juhugaon, Vashi, Turbhe, Indiranagar, and Sanpada are expected to participate.

On the final day, May 24, the van will be based at the Public Hospital in Sector 15, Nerul. Dr. Suresh Patil will head the operation, with patients referred from Shiravane, Nerul (Sectors 1 and 2), Karave, Sector 48, CBD, and Kukshet.

NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has urged all eligible residents above 30 years of age to visit their nearest Urban Primary Health Centre for initial screening. Those identified as potential cancer cases should take advantage of the cancer van’s services on the mentioned dates and locations.

The civic body hopes the campaign will help with early detection and timely treatment, ultimately reducing the burden of cancer in the Navi Mumbai region.
