Mumbai: Acting on a recent judgment by the Supreme Court, the state government has put the responsibility on hospitals and nursing homes if a baby is stolen from the facilities. The competent authority will cancel the registration of the hospital or nursing home concerned according to the Maharashtra Nursing Homes Registration Act, 1949.
The state order issued on Thursday is based on the recent judgments delivered by the apex court while hearing the criminal suits, Pinky Vs Uttar Pradesh & Others (No. 1927 to 1944/2025).
It is the responsibility of the hospital to ensure that there are no incidents of baby theft or trafficking, read the order. If such an incident happens at the government hospitals, the responsibility will be fixed on the people concerned, it warned.

The hospitals and nursing homes will take care of the inmates and their mental health, whose baby was stolen or abducted by offering schemes run by the health department, the order mandated.
