Navi Mumbai News: Tejaswini Buses Back On Roads To Ensure Safe Travel For Women

Originally launched in 2019 as part of a state initiative aimed at creating safer and more reliable public transport for women, the service had started with a fleet of 10 buses. But as the pandemic unfolded and maintenance issues mounted, many buses were sidelined and sent for repairs, forcing the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) to suspend full-scale operations.

After a prolonged hiatus due to technical glitches and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ‘Tejaswini’ women-exclusive bus service is making a comeback in Navi Mumbai.

Today, the buses are rolling out again with renewed purpose. With seven vehicles back on the road and more under repair, the service has resumed on three key routes:

Ghansoli to Vashi Railway Station (Bus No. 9)

Ghansoli to Panvel Railway Station (Bus No. 50)

Artist Village to Kharkopar Railway Station (Bus No. 23)

The service is once again operating exclusively for women during peak hours — from 8 AM to 11 AM and 4 PM to 8 PM — offering not only safety but also a 50% fare concession. Outside of these hours, buses are open to all passengers.

"Since the relaunch, NMMT officials report a steady rise in ridership, especially during office rush hours, suggesting the pent-up demand for women-centric public transport. The initiative not only eases daily travel but also reaffirms the city’s commitment to inclusive urban mobility," said an official

While technical and operational challenges had derailed the service temporarily, its revival is being seen as a much-needed step toward restoring confidence among women commuters. Civic officials confirm that additional buses will be pressed into service soon as they complete repairs and testing.
