Navi Mumbai: In Navi Mumbai, authorities confiscated two tankers for unlawfully releasing chemicals straight into open drains located in the Digha region. Acting on citizen complaints from the Digha Airoli region and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Pollution Control Board, with police assistance, took measures around 1:30 am on Tuesday.
Navi Mumbai, Asia's largest industrial area, is recognised for its factories that manufacture or use chemicals. Generally, these substances should be treated prior to being released into the drains that lead to the creek. Nonetheless, this processing is frequently overlooked, resulting in a powerful smell that bothers nearby residents.

In the past few weeks, a pungent odor was noted in Airoli, especially impacting the Green World CHS, Newa Bhakti Park, and New Garden CHS regions. The odor led to health problems like sore throats, eye irritation, and headaches, particularly affecting the elderly and children.

In spite of ongoing grievances to the Municipal Corporation and police for the last fifteen to twenty days, immediate action was absent until this operation. During a patrol, officials found two tankers unloading 12,000 liters of chemicals into the drains close to Mukund Company. Upon seeing the officials, the drivers escaped, leaving the tankers behind. Residents took joint action, leading to a complaint filed against the tankers and property owners at the Rabale MIDC police station.
MNS Deputy City President Nilesh Bankhile, along with local residents, attended the operation, anticipating ongoing efforts to eliminate the chemical odor and reclaim their right to a healthy environment. Bankhile underscored the necessity for proactive actions from the Pollution Control Board, highlighting that the precise chemical composition of the released liquids would be disclosed in an inspection report.
