Mumbai: The citizens' wait for the Carnac bridge inauguration has come to an end, as several bikers and pedestrians have already started using the newly constructed bridge, which is a crucial connector between P D'mello Road and Mohammad Ali Road in south Mumbai.
BMC Yet To Formally Open The Bridge
The BMC administration is yet to formally open the bridge for traffic movement, as it is waiting for a nod from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
"It is only a matter of a couple of days. We are hopeful we will get orders to open the bridge this week itself," a civic official said.
Meanwhile, the BMC will throw the bridge open for the public without any formal inauguration ceremony by any politician. "The bridge will be open for traffic in a similar way to the Vikhroli bridge, without an inauguration event. The CM is aware that the bridge needs to be open at the earliest, and the BMC is waiting for a formal nod from him," sources said.
"The bridge is ready, all load testings are done, and NOC from the Railways is also obtained. All files are submitted to the seniors, and we are only waiting for orders to open the bridge for traffic," the officer added.
When the FPJ visited the Carnac bridge on Monday, it was observed that some two-wheelers were plying and pedestrians also used to save time.
Once the bridge opens for traffic, it will ease the traffic on already congested P D'mello Road and Mohammad Ali Road.
The British era rail overbridge was demolished in November 2022 after it was declared structurally weak. The bridge was rebuilt at the cost of Rs 60 crore, was completed on June 10, load tests were conducted on June 15, and the Railways NOC was received on June 24.
