Mumbai: The BMC has received 3,018 pothole-related complaints across the city and suburbs in the past month. Civic officials stated that around 85% of these have been addressed, while 474 potholes remain unattended. The complaints include those filed by citizens as well as potholes identified by road engineers during on-site inspections.
The BMC has deployed 227 ward-level sub-engineers to conduct daily inspections, identify potholes, and ensure repairs within 48 hours. It also launched a new mobile app, 'Pothole QuickFix,' on June 11, along with a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot to help citizens register pothole-related complaints. As per data BMC received 1,674 complaints from citizens while civic engineers detected 1,881 potholes in their respective wards till July 1, 2025.
Godfrey Pimenta, founder of the Watchdog Foundation, said, “I raised a complaint about potholes on Sahar Road in Andheri East, but the BMC claimed the road falls under the Mumbai International Airport Ltd.(MIAL), while the MIAL pointed back at the BMC. Why should citizens suffer due to this blame game?”
Vinod Gholap of the Fight for Right Foundation said, “Potholes have reappeared on roads after the recent heavy rains. We hope the situation truly improves and that potholes disappear once all roads are fully concretised.”
A senior civic official noted, “Over the past six years, the number of potholes has dropped from 92,000 to 32,000. The cost of road repairs has also gone down, which shows that road concretisation has played a major role in reducing potholes across the city.” This monsoon, Rs 154 crore has been allocated for pothole repairs on roads with asphalt or paver blocks down from Rs 205 crore last year.
In June 2022, the then chief minister Eknath Shinde announced a mega road concretisation drive to make Mumbai “pothole-free.” The BMC awarded contracts in two phases to concretise nearly 700 km of roads at a cost of Rs. 17,733 crore—320 km in Phase I (700 roads) and 378 km in Phase II (1,421 roads). Nine contractors were appointed, four for Phase I and five for Phase II.
