Mumbai: In memory of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar, 'Khashaba Jadhav Paramparik Krida Mahakumbha' a competition for traditional Indian sports is being organised in Mumbai under the the initiative of Skill Development Minister Shri Mangal Prabhat Lodha. From August 13 to August 22, Mumbaikars will get the chance to experience the excitement of traditional Indian games at the Jam Saheb Mukadam Government Industrial Training Institute grounds in Kurla.
Through this festival, traditional games such as Lezim, Fugdi, Lagori, and Viti Dandu, along with historic martial games from the era of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Minister Shri Lodha expressed that these games are not only sources of recreation but also reflect our cultural heritage.
He added that over time, such traditional sports have become increasingly rare. The time has come to reintroduce these vibrant, indigenous games to the new generation. The contribution of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar to preserving Indian culture is unforgettable, and this festival, held in her memory, has been named after Maharashtra’s Olympic hero, Khashaba Jadhav.
This grand sporting event will include competitions in Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Lagori, Lezim, Tug of War, Mallakhamb, Pawankhind Sprint, Wrestling, Arm Wrestling, Viti Dandu, Rope Skipping, Fugdi, and Yoga, for both men's and women’s categories.
With the support of the organization Krida Bharati, registrations have already begun on a large scale across the Mumbai region. Several schools, ITIs, and colleges have also reached out to Krida Bharati for participation.
Minister Lodha has previously organized similar competition to promote traditional sports in Mumbai, which received an overwhelming public response. Based on that success, this larger-scale event is now being held. Minister Lodha has appealed to the public to actively participate and witness the festivities at the Jam Saheb Mukadam ITI Grounds in Kurla.
