Mumbai was lashed with heavy downpour on Monday. With the revival on monsoon, the rainfall which started Sunday evening, continued throughout Monday whole day, with several areas recording above 200 mm rainfall.
From Sunday 8 pm to Monday 6 pm, on average Mumbai city received 145.66 mm rainfall, eastern suburbs received 128.05 mm and western suburbs received 150.13 mm rainfall, the weather report by the BMC said.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday afternoon upgraded the Yellow Alert to Orange Alert (heavy to very heavy rainfall) for Mumbai which is valid up to 8.30 am on Tuesday. Thane and Palghar districts are also under Orange Alert, while Red Alert is Raigad issued for Raigad.
The incessant rainfall has also brought relief from the heat with the mercury dipping. On Monday, the Colaba observatory recorded maximum and minimum temperatures at 28.4°C and 24.1°C respectively. While Santacruz observatory recorded 30.9°C and 25.4°C respectively. As per local weather forecast by IMD for next 24 hours for Mumbai city and suburbs- The skies will be generally with possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Most of the areas in Mumbai city and suburbs have received more than 200 mm rainfall in the period of 24 hours. From Sunday 6 pm to Monday 6 pm, the weather stations which recorded highest rainfall included: Nadkarni Park, Wadala (222 mm); Bandra Fire station (223 mm); Adarsh Nagar, Worli (217 mm); Pratiksha Nagar, Sion (214 mm), Collector Colony, Chembur (202 mm); Dindoshi (171 mm); BKC (189 mm); Barve Nagar, Ghatkopar (165 mm); Nariyalwadi, Santacruz (178 mm); Madh (164 mm) and BMC head office, CSMT (170 mm) among others.
Disaster incidents
The heavy downpour also resulted into disaster incidents like tree falls and wall collapses.
Total 70 incidents of tree collapses were reported including city, eastern and western suburbs; in which two people suffered injuries. Both the injured were taken nearby hospitals and their condition is stable.
While total 10 incidents of wall collapses were reported. A wall of an under-construction building in Natwar Nagar, Jogeshwari East collapsed in which two women were injured. Both injured were taken to HBT Trauma hospital and one of the victim is seriously injured and admitted in ICU.
Total 18 incidents of short circuit were reported, however, no one was injured.
