Mumbai: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced the development of a high-speed express highway designed to significantly decrease travel time between Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru. This project, already under construction, aims to enable travel from Mumbai to Pune in approximately 90 minutes, and from Pune to Bengaluru in just five hours.
The construction commenced without a formal launch event due to its already underway status. The new route will begin at the Atal Tunnel in Mumbai, connecting to the Pune Ring Road and extending to Bengaluru. In Pune district alone, road and highway projects amounting to ₹50,000 crore are in development, with the region's broader infrastructure works totalling ₹2 lakh crore.
Additionally, new proposals worth ₹15,000 crore will soon be initiated, accompanied by further proposals of the same amount under consideration. The minister highlighted plans for elevated road corridors within Pune to mitigate traffic congestion and indicated that the expansion of Pune airport is on the horizon.
Despite challenges related to land acquisition, he emphasized that political resolve and efficient coordination can address these issues. Regarding historical precedents, Gadkari recounted the previous Mumbai–Pune Expressway project, wherein a private company estimated costs at ₹3,600 crore, while the state completed the work for only ₹1,600 crore.

The Pune-Bengaluru Expressway, part of a ₹40,000 crore investment, aims to trim the travel time between Mumbai and Bengaluru from 18 to just 6 hours. This access-controlled greenfield highway will be approximately 700 km long, featuring two emergency airstrips, 55 flyovers, and 22 interchanges, allowing high-speed travel at a maximum of 120 km/h.
