Mumbai: Number of Govindas injured during Dahi handi increased by 86.55 percent compared to 2019

A civic health official said there have been a few serious injuries such as the cervical, spine, and lower back.

The number of govindas getting injured during Dahi handi has increased by 86.55 per cent as compared to 2019. As per the data, 222 injuries were reported on dahi handi this year as compared to 119 three years ago.

However, exceptfor a few cases of serious cervical, spine and lower back injuries, most of the injured were treated onanOPD basis at civic and state-run hospitals.

As per the BMC data, the highest number of injured, 58, were admitted to the King Edward Memorial (KEM) hospitalfollowedby20 eachat Rajawadi and Trauma Care, 19 at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General (LTMG) Sion, 17 at RN Cooper, 15 at Gokuldas Tejpal (GT), 10 at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Other nine patients were takentoPoddar hospital, eight at Bhabha hospital in Bandra, five each at J J, St George and MT Agrawal hospitals, four at Shatabdi in Govandi, three at MW Desai, twoatSKPatilandoneat Hinduja hospital.

However, Dahi Handi Utsav Samanvay Samiti member Bala Padelkar contended the number of govindas injured this year. “The figures you are quoting are exaggerated and false. Do you even visit hospitals? According to the figures that have already been published, injured govindas this year are less than 125.” He said that a total of 113 govindas were injured; of them, 10 were admitted and four were serious.

“For the serious ones, we are not sitting around and have metthe Chief Minister for financial assistance. If you think the financial assistance CM gives is not adequate, then put that question to him and not to us. Your figures and questions disturb us,” said a livid Padelkar.
