Mumbai: To tackle dust pollution at Dadar’s Shivaji Park, the BMC is working with experts from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) to plan long-term preventive measures.

On Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani inspected the park and its surrounding walkway and directed officials to ensure regular maintenance, timely repairs, and proper cleanliness across the premises.

Test Grass Plots Laid Amid Resident Concerns

Following directives of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and an IIT - B report, the BMC began laying durable grass on two 200 sq m test plots last month to curb dust pollution. However, local residents argue that grass isn't a sustainable long-term solution due to other permitted activities like public gatherings at the park.

IIT-B Collaborates with BMC on Dust Control at Shivaji Park

Gagrani stated "IIT-B is studying the issue and decisions will be based on expert conclusions." Gagrani was accompanied during the visit by local MLA Mahesh Sawant and Assistant Municipal Commissioner of G South Ward, Vinayak Vispute.

A few years ago, the boundary wall around Shivaji Park was refurbished with multicolored square tiles as part of a beautification effort. However, during the recent inspection, several local residents voiced their dissatisfaction with the design and requested that the wall be restored to its original appearance.

Commissioner Orders Timely Repairs and Cleanliness

Acknowledging their concerns, Gagrani directed civic officials to undertake necessary repairs and ensure the structure is maintained regularly and appropriately. The Bombay High Court has permitted public gatherings and events at Shivaji Park for up to 45 days each year.

Mahim Fort May Be Developed into Tourist Attraction

Gagrani also visited the Mahim Fort premises. Recognising the fort as a heritage structure, he emphasised the need to consider both its restoration and the beautification of the surrounding area as part of an integrated plan.

He also suggested exploring ways to develop the site into a prominent tourist attraction in Mumbai, making it a key point of interest for visitors in the future.

Gagrani Meets Raj Thackeray Near Shivaji Park

Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner also met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray at his residence near Shivaji Park. The purpose of the meeting has not been officially disclosed.
