Mumbai: In the aftermath of the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, tensions escalated during a protest held in Mumbai's Vakola on Saturday night to condemn the violence. The demonstration, intended to be a peaceful expression of grief and solidarity, took a violent turn when clashes broke out between two communities. As a result, police have registered cases against 15 individuals involved in the altercation. A youth was reportedly injured in the clash.

The protest was organised in response to the April 22 attack in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, where militants opened fire on tourists, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuries to over 20 others. The victims included 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba group, initially claimed responsibility for the attack but later retracted their statement.

Protest Escalated To Clash Between Two Groups

During the protest, participants from different communities gathered to express their outrage and demand justice for the victims. However, disagreements over the nature of the protest and underlying communal tensions led to a physical confrontation between members of the two groups. Police intervened to disperse the crowd and restore order. A youth reportedly received serious injuries during the violent clash.

In response to the violence, authorities have filed First Information Reports (FIRs) against 15 individuals identified as participants in the clashes. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and hold those responsible accountable. Satyanarayan Chaudhary, Joint commissioner of police, law and order said that the case is registered and situation is completely peaceful.
