Mumbai: Several major fires in Mumbai in a week have raised alarm, though no casualties were reported. However, significant losses in crores have been recorded. Fire officials warn that as temperatures continue to rise, pressure on electrical systems is increasing, heightening the risk of fires in residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) has issued an advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent potential fire hazards.

In light of the ongoing heatwave, the Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards - New Delhi, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, issued a circular on May 1, 2025. Following this, the MFB has released an advisory on Monday, urging citizens to take essential precautions.

Ravindra Ambulgekar, Chief fire officer said, "The rising temperatures have caused electrical wiring to overheat, leading to short circuits and gas leaks. Additionally, the excessive use of fans, air conditioners, refrigerators, and other appliances, coupled with the added strain on electrical systems, significantly increases the risk of fire incidents. If citizens take precautions, there could be a significant reduction in fire-related incidents."

MFB urges citizens to regularly inspect wiring, plugs, switchboards, and appliances at home and work. Turn off fans, ACs, irons, and other appliances after use, and have old wiring repaired by professionals. Keep emergency exits clear, avoid overloading sockets, and use electrical equipment correctly to prevent overload.

Ensure regular maintenance of AC systems. Keep at least one fire extinguisher at home, office, or store, and learn how to use it. Avoid charging phones or using devices overnight. Hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics must implement fire safety systems and conduct regular audits.

On last Sunday, the city witnessed a major fire in the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) zone-1, office in south Mumbai's Ballard Estate. While no casualties were reported in the incident several records were burnt to ashes.

Another major fire occurred on April 29 at Link Square Mall in Bandra West, which houses over 200 shops and commercial establishments. The fire caused extensive damage to the property. On Monday, a massive fire broke out at a designer clothing boutique on the Pedder Road.
